Cartagena de Indias has a fascinating architectural mix due to its variety. Military structures, such as walls, bastions and forts, can be seen next to a well-preserved colonial and republican city. The walls were to be part of the defense plan ordered by Felipe II to strengthen the main ports of the Caribbean Sea. The project took almost two centuries during which the city received numerous pirate attacks and was completed in 1796. The walls can be toured in their entirety and do not be surprised to find couples in love watching the sunset from where the cannons used to be fired. .
Cartagena has churches in its Historic Center and in the Cerro de La Popa that contribute to reliving the epic stories of Saints, fights against evil and stories of love throughout our history. We also recommend a visit to the Fort of San Felipe de Barajas, protector of the city and architect of the most heroic defenses of Cartagena. Get to know the pre-Hispanic culture in the Gold Museum, look for Cartagenan artists in the Museum of Modern Art, learn about witchcraft in the Historical and Inquisition Museum, see the house of former president Rafael Núñez, and feel overwhelmed by the beauty of the Theater Adolfo Mejia.
