LA CATEDRAL

Called the Minor Basilica. Its construction began in 1575, replacing the primitive cathedral (which was "made of wood and reeds"). This cathedral can be considered one of the oldest in America, contemporary with those of Mexico.
In 1586 it was affected by the attack of the pirate Francis Drake, who, in order to press for the rescue of the captured city, ordered the building's nave to be blown up, resulting in the fall of three columns and four arches, damage which took be repaired.
On August 7, 1600, the main nave and a lateral one collapsed suddenly, without warning, and the cathedral was almost finished. The straw ended up temporarily covering the damage but it didn't help much every time there was a heavy downpour.
In 1612 it was finally finished, with sepulchral vaults being added later. Its altar is entirely made of wood and is richly adorned with gold.
