Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino, historic and majestic

Remarkable and majestic since its beginnings in the 17th century, the Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino was called the Florida de San Pedro Alejandrino at the time of Canon Francisco de Godoy y Cortesía. Today, it is one of the sites of tourist and historical interest, which has the largest number of visitors due to the historical value it has in hosting the Liberator Simón Bolívar, who died at the Hacienda on December 17, 1830.

Each space is a cult to his memory, to those moments of life of the greatest Prócer of Hispanoamerica and the world. Where the visitor has the opportunity to tour and learn what those last days of the Liberator were like. Identified since the wars of independence with the patriotic cause, Joaquín De Mier y Benítez offers lodging to El Libertador upon his arrival in the city of Santa Marta on December 1, 1830, coming from the Port of Sabanilla, Atlántico; after navigating the Magdalena River looking for the path of exile, having resigned from the Presidency of Gran Colombia.

Initially housed in the Customs House -former House of the Spanish Consulate-, on December 6 -at the request of Joaquín De Mier and Dr. Alejandro Prosper Reverend- Bolívar is transferred to the Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino.

The first four days, Bolívar wanders around the entire hacienda, then falls into bed and never leaves his room again. From this thick-walled enclosure, shaded by the branches of centuries-old trees, El Libertador sends a generous message of freedom, union and fraternity to the newly created nations of America.

On Friday, December 17, 1830 at 1:00 PM, afflicted by illness and sadness, El Libertador Simón Bolívar dies in the main bedroom of the Fifth House.
The Hacienda at the beginning of the 19th century passed into the hands of Manuel Faustino de Mier y Terán and, almost immediately, it was inherited by his son Joaquín De Mier y Benítez. Years later, when Don Joaquín de Mier died, his son Manuel Julián De Mier kept the hacienda until 1891, the year in which it was sold to the Department of Magdalena.

Currently, the Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino preserves the architectural and landscape characteristics and values of its beginnings, as well as authentic elements of historical and environmental interest; part of the period furniture and some objects that originally belonged to the De Mier family are still preserved. The Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino was the privileged place for the birth of a cultural treasure called the Bolivarian Museum of Contemporary Art. An idea of the Colombian-Peruvian Master Armando Villegas, who together with the approval of the former President of the Republic, Belisario Betancur, the former Minister of Development, Gustavo Castro Guerrero, in addition to the Masters Enrique Grau, Alejandro Obregón, Jorge Elías Triana and Hernando Del Villar who with their ideas and contributions made possible the creation of the Museum.

The halls of the Bolivarian Museum have featured exhibitions by the most outstanding artists from Bolivarian, Latin American and other latitudes, who have delighted the entire public, thus contributing to the cultural development of our region and country.

The Bolivarian Museum of Contemporary Art and the Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino have reached their visiting public with a varied program in alliance with other cultural entities. Colombia and the world have in the Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino and the Bolivarian Museum of Contemporary Art an invaluable treasure that transcends borders, which makes not only the samarians proud, but also all Colombians, based on that Bolivarian thought sustained over time. .
