Founded by Law of the first Congress of the Republic on July 28, 1823, it is one of the oldest in America. It was initially inaugurated in the Casa Botánica, a place that housed the natural history collection.
Born as a science museum, the collections of the National Museum occupy, since 1948 and to date, the facilities of the former Central Penitentiary of Cundinamarca, popularly known as PANÓPTICO.
Café del Museo has a restaurant and store of gifts, publications and souvenirs from other museums in the world.
